Built-Up Roofing (BUR) consists of layers of asphalt, tar, or an adhesive with an aggregate. Using BUR is perfect for flat roofs that have roof-top decks or generally lots of heavy foot traffic. The felt is applied in overlapping layers to form a barrier two to four layers thick, then a layer of finely crushed stone is embedded in hot tar over the top to create a very durable and impenetrable roof.
